Why does it work?
- Licking is a self-soothing action for many dogs.
- Slows down ingestion and promotes concentration on a simple task.
- Useful for defusing departures or occupying time during mild boredom.
Easy recipes (to be spread thinly)
- Base “yogurt + puree” : plain unsweetened yogurt + pumpkin or banana puree.
- Base “fresh cheese” : plain fresh cheese + a little rinsed tuna.
- Light option : diluted mash with a little warm water.
- Summer : put in the freezer for 20–30 min for a longer effect (keep an eye on the dog).
Important: adapt to your dog's tolerances; avoid salt/garlic/onion and sugary foods.
Duration & frequency
- Duration : 5–15 min depending on the reason (short calming vs occupation).
- Frequency : 1/day possible; vary the recipes to keep it interesting.
- Key moment : give it before a departure, during a visit, or at the end of the day to help with the comedown.
Safety & Hygiene
- Monitor the first few uses (do not chew/ingest).
- Choose a non-slip mat that is easy to wash (dishwasher safe if compatible).
- Rinse with warm soapy water after use; dry thoroughly.
Dirt-removal tip
Place the mat on a non-slip placemat and serve in an easy-to-clean area (kitchen). Place a bowl of water nearby.
When it doesn't work…
- Recipe not attractive enough → increase palatability (chicken, quality pâté).
- Overstimulated dog → offer it after a short sniffing walk.
- Dog chews the rug → use a flatter texture and monitor.
