What size harness should I choose? | TerreCompagnons

What size harness should I choose for my dog?

Chest circumference measurement, essential adjustments, adjustment tolerance and errors to avoid for optimal comfort.

1) Take the right measurement

  1. Get yourself a flexible measuring tape.
  2. Measure the chest circumference (just behind the front legs) at the end of an exhalation.
  3. Note the value and add a 2–3 cm comfort margin for ease.

2) Read the size guide

Refer to the manufacturer's size chart (e.g., XS 35–45 cm, S 45–55 cm, M 55–70 cm, L 70–85 cm, XL 85–100 cm). Choose the size where your measurement falls in the middle of the range to allow for adjustment.

3) Adjust correctly

  • "Two-finger" test under each strap: neither too tight nor too loose.
  • The sternal strap must remain horizontal (not rise up onto the throat).
  • The shoulders must be free to maintain the range of motion.

4) Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying "one size up" without measuring: risk of chafing and slipping.
  • Ignoring morphology (broad chest, short back, growing puppy).
  • Neglecting the dynamic test: walk for 2–3 minutes and check for the absence of irritation.

5) Quick checklist

  • Chest circumference measured & noted.
  • Size range selected with adjustment margin.
  • "Two-finger" test OK, shoulders clear, sternal strap horizontal.
  • Dynamic testing without redness or discomfort.
