Removing a tick from a dog: the 3-step method
Using tick tweezers : clean extraction, disinfection and monitoring. No crushing, no ether, no oil.
Before we begin
- Wash your hands. Prepare: tick tweezers , compresses, mild antiseptic, disposable gloves (optional).
-
Do not use ether, alcohol, oil or try to burn the tick: this may cause regurgitation of digestive contents into the wound.
- If the tick is near the eyes , in the deep ear, or if your dog is in pain: seek professional help.
Step 1 — Position the tool
- Gently part the hairs. Place the tick tweezers flush with the skin , under the tick's body, as close as possible to the mouthparts.
- Make sure to “clamp” the base (rostrum); do not pinch the tick’s body.
Step 2 — Remove without crushing
- Pull vertically and evenly (or make a micro-rotation if your tool is designed for it).
- Continue constant traction until the skin releases completely. Do not twist or shake the skin.
Step 3 — Disinfect & monitor
- Place the tick in a closed container (or toilet). Do not crush it by hand.
- Clean the small wound with a mild antiseptic (avoid concentrated alcohol).
- Note the date and location of the body . Monitor for 2–3 weeks: spreading redness, swelling, fever, lethargy = veterinarian .
Preventing future bites
- Quick inspection after walks (neck, ears, armpits, between toes).
- Detangled fur, regular brushing, tick tweezers always in the kit.
- Environmental discipline: grass cut, bedding washed weekly.
