Dog bad breath: what to do?
Common causes (plaque, tartar, diet), a clear hygiene routine , and when to consult a doctor.
1) Where does the smell come from?
-
Plaque & tartar : bacteria and inflammation of the gums.
-
Food fragments stuck, inconsistent hygiene.
-
Inappropriate food , sticky treats.
- Less commonly: digestive or kidney problems → veterinarian .
2) The simple 7-day plan
-
Days 1–2: wiping teeth/gums with microfiber glove + gel.
-
J3: addition of a finger cot for mini-brushing (30–60 s).
-
Days 4–5: more thorough brushing (easy areas) + textured toy .
-
Days 6–7: Stabilize the routine, choose a suitable dental treat .
3) Useful Care & Habits
-
Brushing 2–3 times/week. minimum.
-
Daily supervised chewing .
-
Fresh water (ideally from a fountain ) for “rinsing”.
-
Less sticky rewards , rich in lean meat.
4) When to consult?
- Very strong breath persisting despite the routine for 2–3 weeks.
- Bleeding gums, pain, anorexia, loose teeth.
- Puppy/senior or dog with pathologies: veterinary advice recommended.
