Choosing an orthopedic bed | TerreCompagnons

How to choose an orthopedic bed for your dog

Foam density & structure, size, cover, anti-slip: the simple checklist for a truly comfortable bed.

1) Structure & density

  • Double layer : supportive base + memory foam to distribute pressure.
  • Density : avoid foams that sag; favour support that retains its shape over time.
  • Thickness : medium sizes → 8–10 cm; large sizes → 10–15 cm.

2) Size & ergonomics

  • The dog must be able to stretch out fully in it .
  • Edges : useful for resting the head, but low entry for stiff joints.
  • Place the bed in a quiet corner , away from walkways.

3) Cover & hygiene

  • Removable cover : machine washable = simplified hygiene.
  • Durable fabric : scratching, hair, small accidents; add a mattress protector if needed.
  • Non-slip base to prevent slipping.

4) Special needs

  • Senior dogs : moderate edges, firm enough surface to stand up on.
  • Large sizes : reinforced thickness/support.
  • Dogs sensitive to the cold : materials retain heat, warm room.

5) Quick checklist

  • Base + memory foam (support + comfort).
  • Suitable size (extended dog).
  • Washable cover + optional mattress protector.
  • Non-slip base, quiet location.
