Dog hydration: everything you need to know
Signs of dehydration, daily needs, easy routines and choosing a water fountain with filter maintenance to drink more, every day.
Why hydration is crucial
In dogs, water plays a role in thermoregulation, digestion, nutrient transport, waste elimination, and joint lubrication. A dog that drinks enough has more energy, recovers better after exercise, and is less likely to develop urinary tract infections.
The problem: many dogs don't drink enough water every day. The good news: a few adjustments to the environment, equipment (water fountain), and routine make all the difference.
Water requirements: how much per day?
Practical rule : ~50–70 ml of water / kg / day, to be adjusted according to temperature, activity, diet.
Feeding : a wet ration (paste) contributes more to hydration than a dry ration.
Activity : a sporting dog can exceed 90 ml/kg/day on hot days.
Example : a 15 kg dog will drink on average 750–1050 ml/day, more if it is hot or if it is very active.
Dehydration: signs to recognize
Dry gums , thickened saliva.
Decreased skin elasticity (skin fold test).
Lethargy , capricious appetite, dark and less frequent urine .
If in doubt, consult your veterinarian.
Routines and tips to encourage people to drink more
Increase the number of water points (2-3 quiet, easily accessible places).
Fresh, clean water : change 1–2 times/day, rinse containers.
Move the food bowl away from dogs sensitive to smells.
Add appeal : ice cubes of unsalted chicken cooking water, or lightly flavored water cube (without onion/garlic).
Go to the fountain : moving water is more attractive to many dogs.
Fountain vs. bowl: which to choose?
A bowl is simple and economical, but the water stagnates and warms up. A fountain provides circulating, filtered water that is often cooler; it encourages drinking and reduces unwanted tastes and odors.

Choosing the right fountain
Capacity : 2–3 L for most dogs; more if multi-pet household.
Material : stainless steel or food-grade material that is easy to clean.
Noise : opt for quiet models to avoid aversion.
Filtration : carbon/mesh; filters available in the shop.
