1) The equipment for measuring
- Flexible measuring tape (sewing) or string + ruler.
- Treats to keep the dog calm and standing.
- An assistant if your dog moves around a lot.
2) Take the 2 key steps
A) Chest circumference (mandatory)
Place the tape measure behind the elbows , at the widest point of the rib cage. The dog is standing straight , breathing normally. Note the measurement in cm .
B) Neck circumference (often useful)
Measure the base of the neck (neck/shoulder junction), where the chest strap passes for head-pull harnesses. Note in cm.
Tip: Measure twice and take the average. For growing puppies, add 2–3 cm of extra space and choose a highly adjustable model.
3) Read our charts & choose the size
Example of interpretation:
- If your chest measurement is 57 cm and size M covers 50–60 cm, then size M is suitable.
- Between two sizes (e.g., 60 cm exactly on M 50–60 and L 58–70): sturdy/hairy dog → L; slim dog → M (if adjustment sufficient).

4) Adjust the harness in 60 seconds
- Position : the Y -junction must touch the sternum (center of the thorax), never the throat.
- Comfort : slide 2 fingers under each strap (neither tight nor loose).
- Free shoulders : the strap should not cut into the shoulder blade.
- 10-step test : the harness does not rotate, does not ride up the neck, no chafing under the armpits.
For dogs that pull, start with the front leash , then switch to the back leash when the walk becomes more relaxed. See: 15-minute routine .
5) Common mistakes to avoid
- ❌ Choosing by sight or by weight alone : always measure.
- ❌ Harness that causes suffocation (junction too high on the throat).
- ❌ Straps too loose : risk of slipping out backwards.
- ❌ Ignoring body shape (large chest, dense coat) when you are between two sizes.
- ❌ Do not re-check the settings after 2–3 rides (the fabric settles).
FAQ – Measurements & Sizes
My dog is between two sizes, which one should I get?
Broad chest/dense coat: choose the largest size . Slender dog: the smallest size if the adjustment range allows.
Should the neck area also be measured?
Yes, if the harness goes over the head . Otherwise, the chest measurement is often sufficient.
How many times should the fit be checked?
At reception, then after 2–3 walks , then weekly for puppies (rapid growth).
My dog marks under its armpits:
Add 0.5–1 cm for ease, check the strap height . If necessary, change size/model.
